Hackney Council sets term dates for the area’s maintained schools, published via its official term dates page. Hackney’s schools have one of the most dramatic turnaround stories in English education: in 2002 the chief inspector of schools described them as the worst in the country, prompting a not-for-profit trust to take over education services from the council for a decade, and within ten years Hackney’s results had risen above the national average and parents were competing for places rather than avoiding them. Department for Education data shows around 32% of Hackney’s schools are academies overall, rising to 75% at secondary level, while primary conversion remains much lower at 18%. As with most local authorities, these dates apply directly to maintained schools; academies may set their own calendar, so it’s worth checking with your child’s school directly.
