Derby City Council sets term dates for the area’s maintained schools, published via its official term dates page. Derby has been a unitary authority since 1 April 1997, when it regained responsibility for education and other county-level services from Derbyshire County Council, a status the city also held before 1974. According to the Department for Education’s Get Information About Schools register, around 71% of Derby’s state-funded primary and secondary schools are now academies or free schools, rising to over 80% at secondary level, so most families here are more likely to deal with an academy trust than the council directly. As with most local authorities, these dates apply to the remaining maintained schools; academies may set their own calendar and training days, so it’s worth checking with your child’s school directly. See our guide to why academies and maintained schools have different dates for more on how this works.
