Reading Borough Council sets term dates for the area’s maintained schools, published via its official term dates page. Reading became a unitary authority in 1998, when Berkshire County Council was abolished and all six of its districts took on county-level responsibilities themselves; Berkshire remains the only ceremonial county in England with no county council at all. Department for Education data shows around 45% of Reading’s schools are academies overall, rising to 91% at secondary level while remaining much lower, around 33%, at primary level. As with most local authorities, these dates apply directly to the borough’s remaining maintained schools; academies may set their own calendar, so it’s worth checking with your child’s school directly. See our guide to why academies and maintained schools have different dates for more.
