North Somerset Council sets term dates for the area’s maintained schools, published via its official term dates page. North Somerset was one of four unitary authorities created in 1996 when the short-lived county of Avon was abolished, alongside Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Department for Education data shows every mainstream school in North Somerset, 100% at both primary and secondary level, is now an academy, making it one of very few local authorities on this entire site with no maintained schools left at all. Because of this, parents in North Somerset should check directly with their child’s school for term dates and INSET days, since academies set their own calendar independently of the council. See our guide to why academies and maintained schools have different dates for more on how this works.
