Luton Borough Council sets term dates for the area’s maintained schools, published via its official term dates page. Luton has been a unitary authority since 1997, independent of the county council structure that then covered the rest of Bedfordshire; when Bedfordshire County Council was itself abolished in 2009 and split into Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire, Luton was already outside that arrangement. Department for Education data shows around 48% of Luton’s state schools, and 85% of secondaries, are now academies, though primary conversion is lower, at around 37%. As with most local authorities, these dates apply directly to the borough’s remaining maintained schools; academies and free schools may set their own calendar and training days, so it’s worth checking with your child’s school directly if they attend one. See our guide on how INSET days are chosen for more on predicting these closures.
